KAIROUAN   11 October 2000

In the morning, we took the highway from Tunis to Sfax, and midway, we branched to the route to Kairouan. The route is approximately 160 km, and it took us about 1 hour 30 minutes. Except the highway, all major roads have one lane per direction.

Shop in the Medina of Kairouan  In Kairouan, all major sights seem to be within walking distance. The Medina again consisted of bazaar, narrow streets, and historical sights like mosques, mausoleums, etc. Again muslims can enter everywhere, and pay no entrance fee, while non-muslims pay a fee and can only enter to the patios. If you are interested in Islamic architecture, it is really worthwile visiting Kairouan. There are a lot of mosques and mausoleums  worth seeing. Minaret of the Great Mosque of Kairouan

Taylan, writing postcards, as usual...

However, we kind of felt that one day was enough, so we started off to Gabes. Driving in the evening is not so nice, as there are no street lights on intercity roads, and no reflectors or sign posts at the sides of the road. Also drivers only turn their lights on after complete darkness. The road is 210 km and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

In the evening, we reached Gabes, and after looking at the one and two star hotels (horrible! Lots of cockroaches, at least in those we looked at.), we decided to pay a little more and stay in a 3 star one: Hotel Chems, 70 Dinars for two, including breakfast (Hotel Oasis, also three starts, but 60 Dinars for two with breakfast, was full). The rooms were large and clean, with sea-view, but nevertheless not a hotel for a long stay.
