Maui

Road to Hana
February 16, 2005 - The road to Hana is one of the beautiful scenic roads in the island. There are numerous waterfalls on the way and some beautiful beaches with huge waves since it is the windy part of the island. People are allowed to swim in some of the waterfalls but the water is really cold. 53 miles of way took more than 3 hours due to frequent stops on the way and road conditions. We stopped every couple of miles to see the vista. We learnt that a tsunami created from an earthquake in Alaska hit this area 60 years ago. It caused damage, but also carried coconuts into the hills, so now there are naturally grown coconut trees in higher locations. There is a warning system on the island in preparation for the next tsunami.

Twin Falls

On the way

Bamboo forest on the wayside

Wainapanapa State Park
This place is really beautiful, and we decided to come back and camp here. You can also rent a cabin. Only the swimming in winter is probably not very safe...There is a black sand beach, caves and blow holes (holes in lava flow by the seaside where waves blow through)

Hotel Hana Maui

Hamoa Beach
Hamoa Beach in Hana is definitely a beautiful beach, and we enjoyed the big waves. It seems to be a good beach for surfing, but there were only a couple of surfers and more sunbathing tourists. Hotel Hana Maui has some changing rooms and restrooms there and seems to be acting as if this were a private beach (it is not).
